The Taste of History event is a timeline event of military impressions. All eras are welcome from the Roman Legions to modern day, with a special emphasis on the food of the common soldier. This provides a unique level of interaction with the public. Please read all information below before proceeding to the registration link at the bottom of the page.
Event Time: Thursday – Sunday, June 13-16, 2024, in Amherst, Ohio
The Taste of History event is a timeline event of military impressions. All eras are welcome from the Roman Legions to modern day, with a special emphasis on the food of the common soldier. This provides a unique level of interaction with the public.
There will be space provided for wartime civilian home front and camp follower displays. While the event is centered around providing period correct meals from field kitchens, there is adequate space for historical displays, including military vehicles, static displays, and weapons demos. The Amherst Historical Society’s Sandstone Village provides a beautiful backdrop with historic buildings, many of which will be available for use for various impressions. There will be organized weapons demonstrations scheduled throughout the event.
As the event is focused on the food that soldiers have eaten through the ages, displays centered around rations are highly encouraged. There will be field kitchens providing food on site on Friday and Saturday, so there should be plenty to eat. Amherst is also supporting this event and there will be organized excursions into town.
There will be a pub crawl on Thursday night in downtown Amherst, and the Amherst Historical Society is organizing special reenactor-only events for Friday and Saturday night as a thank-you.

There will be showers available on site. The event location has public restroom facilities spaced throughout and there will be additional porta-johns on site.
This is a highly advertised public event and is expected to draw an even larger crowd than the over 2,500 attendees last year.
Setup begins on Wednesday, June 12th, starting at 12:00 noon. The main event opens Friday morning at 9:00 AM. All setup will need to be completed by 8:00 AM Friday, and all modern vehicles need to be moved from the site by 7:30 AM. Displays requiring more time to set up can coordinate earlier arrivals.

The parking lot is about half a mile down the road and there will be shuttles running between the event site, the parking lot, and town on Thursday (for reenactors and vendors only), Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (for reenactors and vendors only).
Additional accommodations for female reenactors:
For female reenactors who do not want to rough it in the camp area, there will be space in the Amherst Historical Society's hall (with access to a real bathroom) to set up sleeping bags, air mattresses, etc. You may also set up in the historic buildings in Sandstone Village with your displays, but all modern sleeping gear must be out of sight during event hours.
